Edgar Esquivel, popular owner of Puerto Barrios Bar and Restaurant on Chambers St. has died following a violent armed attack in Agua Blanca, Guatemala.

Esquivel, 55, suffered one gunshot wound to his head early Saturday morning in the Tecuan neighborhood. Firefighters attended to Esquivel but he died inside an ambulance.

Esquivel had gained celebrity status in July 2011 when he rescued Brenda Charcalla, her two sons and a family friend from a fiery crash on a Virginia interstate.

Esquivel trailed a truck that towed a camper when that vehicle left the road and crashed into a wooded area. The incident killed husband and father Gary Charcalla. Esquivel helped another rescuer lift a transmission off Brenda and then toted her to safety. He then broke truck windows and freed the children just as the vehicle burst into flames.

In October 2016, five years after the rescue, Brenda Charcalla visited Esquivel in his Chambers St. restaurant. Friends had used Facebook to help reunite the two. Charcalla presented Esquivel a plaque that expressed her gratitude for his bravery.

Saturday morning, the hero who had saved four lives had his life taken.

In a late developing story, Tecuan, Guatemalan police arrested a suspect in Esquivel’s killing. Police said the two men had shared drinks before the violent incident occurred.

Esquivel, de 55 años, sufrió una herida de bala en la cabeza la madrugada del sábado en el barrio Tecuan. Bomberos asistieron a Esquivel pero falleció dentro de una ambulancia.

Esquivel había adquirido estatus de celebridad en julio de 2011 cuando rescató a Brenda Charcalla, a sus dos hijos y a un amigo de la familia de un violento accidente en una carretera interestatal de Virginia.

Esquivel seguía a un camión que remolcaba una caravana cuando ese vehículo se salió de la carretera y se estrelló contra una zona boscosa En el incidente se mató el esposo y padre, Gary Charcalla. Esquivel ayudó junto  a otro rescatista a sacar del carro a  Brenda y la llevo a un lugar seguro. Luego rompió las ventanillas del camión y liberó a los niños justo cuando el vehículo estalló en llamas.

En octubre de 2016, cinco años después del rescate, Brenda Charcalla visitó a Esquivel en su restaurante de Chambers St. Los amigos habían usado Facebook para ayudar a reunir a los dos. Charcalla entregó a Esquivel una placa en la que expreso su agradecimiento por su valentía.

El sábado por la mañana, le quitaron la vida al héroe que había salvado cuatro vidas.

En un artículo de última hora, Tecuan, la policía guatemalteca arrestó a un sospechoso del asesinato de Esquivel. La policía dijo que los dos hombres habían compartido bebidas antes de que ocurriera el incidente violento.
