ECOWAS and ECCAS leaders meet for the first time ever in Togo to discuss to security threats

The West and Central African leaders are in talks for the first time ever to strengthen cooperation on peace, security and stability.

  • The first joint summit (ECOWAS/ECCAS) intends to strengthen cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism.

The heads of state and government of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are in talks for the first time ever to strengthen cooperation on peace, security and stability.

The first joint summit (ECOWAS/ECCAS) is scheduled to start in Lomé, Togo, on Monday, July 30, 2018, will be witnessed by representatives of the member states of the two communities.

The summit intends to strengthen cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism.

First ECOWAS/ECCAS summit

The idea of the collaboration is to promote a deep and sincere dialogue that identifies the real causes of the problems and eliminates distrust. The two blocs are intended to create a conducive environment in which, in the case of signatures of agreements, their violation by their signatories is increasingly unlikely.

Delegates

Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari will attend the Joint ECOWAS/ECCAS Summit, which will deliberate on common security threats to countries in West Africa and members of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) with a view to forging concerted strategies in tackling the menace of terrorism, trans-border crimes and other forms of violent extremism.

Other delegates

African leaders from Angola, Cameroon, Burundi, Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Congo, Rwanda, Benin, Burkina Faso and Cabo Verde, Côte D'ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone will also be attending the summit.
